Public Realm Improvements in Mohill 2023

There are exciting changes afoot for the streetscape of Mohill with plans to make the town more attractive and accessible for pedestrians, drivers, residents, and visitors alike. The Irish Architectural Foundation states that well designed public places can ‘contribute to and be a catalyst of positive change’ with the ability to ‘transform lives and places where we live, learn, work and play’.
What is the public realm? It is the parts and infrastructure of our locality which the public can access freely e.g footpaths, streets, and roads and parks, public buildings – all of which need to be maintained to ensure public safety, public enjoyment and ease of access, be that traffic or pedestrians.
This project is being funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) and Leitrim County Council. Minister Heather Humphreys announced a fund of €2.5 million with works due to commence later this year.
The Scheme will include the widening of footpaths and the introduction of shared surface space to provide enhanced pedestrian crossings. Existing road surfaces and street lighting will be improved. Street furniture, signage and landscaping will be used to create more social areas for community gatherings. Four areas of the town have been earmarked for improvements which are : the junction of Main Street (R201) / Castle Street (R202) O’Carolan monument / St. Marys ; Glebe Street (R202) / public Car Park and Water Street; Main Street (R201) and Hyde Street (R202) / Glebe Street (R202) and Main Street / Green Lane / Butter Market; Main Street (R201) and Chapel Lane (at St. Patricks Church). Works are also being carried out to the curtilage of St. Mary’s Church which is a protected structure.
