New Life for Mohill Station House – Redevelopment of the Railway Station

In 2019 Mohill’s Economic Development Plan identified the redevelopment of the Railway Station & Former Stationmaster House as a key priority for the town. Furthermore in 2020 a Town Health check by Queen’s University further reiterated the significance of developing the Station House site. In 2021 the Town Team successfully led on an application for funding under the Town & Village scheme and secured €500,000 to rejuvenate the Railway Station. The aim of the funding is to bring the building back into use for the community and provide space for a range of amenities, including arts, heritage and tourism.
Noel Smith and Associates are the architects appointed to lead the design of the project which gets the ball rolling. The Railway Station in Mohill was an important link in the Cavan Leitrim narrow gauge railway line which opened in 1887, linking the towns of Dromod, Mohill, Drumshanbo, Arigna and Ballinamore in Co. Leitrim to Ballyconnell and Belturbet in Co Cavan. The former station building comprises a two-storey station Master’s House and Station reception rooms. The station building stands on a circa two-acre site. This project aims to resume connectivity between this historically significant building and the town of Mohill.
